Texas CFL Distribution Project

Global Climate Strategies is announcing the implementation of a new GHG reduction project using the UN methodology: Energy Efficiency Improvement Projects.

We recognize that there is a financial hardship associated with the up-front cost of implementing energy efficiency. This cost is a substantial barrier for households in the lowest income categories and causes them be unable to implement technologies that offer substantial energy savings. The Compact Florescent Lightbulb (CFL) is a simple technology that provides up to 70% savings of electricity vs. ordinary incandescent bulbs. Because lighting is a significant portion of home electric bills, families can save up to 20 or 30% of their overall electric bills by replacing lights with CFLs.

Our CFL Distribution Project removes this financial barrier and allows our neediest families the opportunity to make efficiency changes right now. We will provide the lightbulbs and the education to implement an effective efficiency program.

GCS is now giving away a MILLION CFL bulbs in Texas in this project!

Next, we plan to expand it to 15 more US states and 15 MILLION more CFL bulbs.

This will reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by over four MILLION tons!

We have partnered with Electric Cooperatives and Non-profit agencies that serve lower income families to distribute the CFLs according to a UN-approved GHG-reduction methodology. The program has completed validation and verification by a certified third party to ensure it meets the highest standards for Verified Emission Reductions. We will begin offering the Carbon Offsets obtained from this project on voluntary market registries, beginning in late 2008.

The following design elements are part of the CFL Distribution project.

  • Each participating household may exchange up to 20 CFLs per household.
  • Each CFL will be a one-for-one exchange of a CFL for a low-efficiency 60W or 100W incandescent bulb.
  • An educational campaign will be done to inform the participants of the energy savings, other ways to reduce electric use and how to dispose of dead or broken bulbs.
  • Participants of this program will achieve substantial savings on their energy bills.
  • GHG rductions will be achieved for up to eight years by implementing this project.
